Midpoint Formula and Methodology
The calculator uses the standard midpoint formula from coordinate geometry.
The midpoint formula
M = ((x₁ + x₂) / 2, (y₁ + y₂) / 2)
If the two points are A = (x₁, y₁) and B = (x₂, y₂), the midpoint is found by averaging their x-coordinates and averaging their y-coordinates.
Calculation steps
- Add the x-coordinates of the two points.
- Divide that sum by 2 to find the midpoint's x-coordinate.
- Add the y-coordinates of the two points.
- Divide that sum by 2 to find the midpoint's y-coordinate.
Worked example
Suppose A = (2, 4) and B = (8, 10).
- Midpoint x-coordinate: (2 + 8) / 2 = 5
- Midpoint y-coordinate: (4 + 10) / 2 = 7
Therefore, the midpoint is M = (5, 7).
Distance between the points
The calculator also computes the Euclidean distance using d = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²). This distance is separate from the midpoint calculation.
Numerical precision
Calculations use JavaScript numbers, which follow IEEE 754 double-precision floating-point arithmetic. Displayed results are formatted for readability, so very small rounding differences may occur for some decimal inputs.
